Desktoptwo testing
December 30, 2006

The Next Day

So I'm now trying this Desktoptwo thing from home. This time I'm using Safari on my Mac while connecting wirelessly to my home network. Not that I expected any difference in performance but it's always good to check. I'm testing IE7 in my work environment and it too isn't supposed to have any issues but it does. Might be one more benefit to this hosted desktop stuff.

I think the next step would be to test hardware options. I mean, as long as I'm using a PC, I have an OS and therefore really don't need this service. The real benefit comes if I can forgo the cost of a PC altogether and use something like a thin client or maybe the internet access on my TV or the new Opera browser that installs in a Wii gaming console. THAT would really get a benefit over a PC.

An Interesting First Start

Sooo...
Here I am working on a desktop that isn't my desktop. Well, it is my desktop but it isn't on my PC. Nope, it's a hosted operating system from a place called desktoptwo.com. It's a very interesting concept in that they host everything, your files, the applications and the actual OS. In essence, it's an online PC. Makes backups and virus control a non issue. Means my "PC" is essentially anywhere I can find an internet connection. Reminds me of something I saw in a spy movie a number of years ago.

On the other hand, there is the issue that I need a pc with an OS to get to the internet to get to the server with my OS but that will change if this technology matures like I think it would.

Imagine only needing a thin client with an internet access to have the same functionalities as a PC. The minimalist foot print would allow you to have the same capabilities as a PC from your phone, your car (using clearwire for access?) your refrigerator? Your tractor? Your lawn flamingo... the opportunities is endless. Heck, get an web tool integrated into a watch, plug in a set of video glasses and use a bluetooth laser keyboard (available on thinkgeek.com) and you are off and running, literally!

Stick around, I'm pretty sure there will be a lot more information on this coming from my testing.
